Bhongrya Haat Begins with Fervour Ahead of Tribal Holi Celebrations
The iconic haat(Adivasi traditional festival being performed at market places) unites villages from Jalgaon, Dhule and border areas, showcasing folk music, dance and age-old customs.
The ‘Bhongrya Haat’, a vibrant cultural festival that preserves tribal heritage and marks the run-up to Holi—the most significant festival of the tribal community—commenced with great enthusiasm from February 24,with widespread excitement among tribal communities across the Khandesh region, including Jalgaon and Dhule districts, as well as adjoining border areas of Madhya Pradesh.
Speaking about the cultural importance of the festival, Ramdas Pawara, Jalgaon District President of Birsa Brigade, shed light on the community’s age-old traditions and values. Preparations for Holi Offerings and Celebrations the Bhongrya Haat is far more than a festival ; it is a grand congregation that kick-starts preparations for Holi. Essential offerings and festive delicacies—such as roasted pulses, peanuts, sweet sev, boondi, salted cucumber, dates, and other food items—are traditionally purchased here. Community members also buy new clothes, traditional attire, materials to repair drums and traditional instruments, and other cultural items, marking the formal beginning of Holi festivities.
A living display of Culture: Drums, and Folk Dance
Groups from various villages arrive in colourful processions, carrying drums, mandals, cymbals, and flutes. Dressed in traditional attire, they perform spirited dances to rhythmic drumbeats, welcoming the Holi festival. These performances serve as a rehearsal for the grand celebrations ahead and remain a major attraction for visitors.
Marriage-Related Rumours and misconceptions about the festival
Ramdas Pawara firmly refuted claims that spouses are chosen at the Bhongrya Haat. He clarified, “From Makar Sankranti until the conclusion of all Holi-related rituals, no marriage ceremonies take place in our community. It is against our customs. Claims that partner selection occurs at the Bhongrya Haat are completely false and misleading. Our society strictly follows its traditions and rules.
